Smart City Project Overview
Established a 50 Mile Dedicated Short Range Communication (DSRC) Connected Vehicle Test Road from Streetsboro through Lorain, Ohio. This includes 15 roadside units with two-way communication with connected vehicles and 38 turnpike (heavy to medium duty) vehicles.

IMPACT STATEMENT
With its existing 241-mile long fiber-optic network and completion of a 50-mile-long connected vehicle test bed in 2018, the Ohio Turnpike became the Midwest’s First Connected Highway.
As part of the connected highway, 15 dedicated short-range communication roadside (DSRC) units were installed at Toll Plazas, Service Plazas, Maintenance Buildings and the Administration Building along the Ohio Turnpike.
The roadside units connect to our existing fiber optic network and have the capability to receive and broadcast safety messages including road weather warnings, traffic incidents, curve speed warnings and the presence of work zones to customers who have connected vehicle technology on board their vehicles.
On October 29, 2019, Governor Mike DeWine signed Executive Order #2019-26D re-establishing DriveOhio as the statewide center for smart mobility and announced that DriveOhio’s mission to advance connected and self-driving vehicle technology on the ground and in the air will continue.
The mission is clear: increase safety, enhance mobility, expand access, improve reliability, and attract, prepare and retain Ohio’s talent.
As a DriveOhio partner, the Ohio Turnpike will continue to pursue and deploy advances in smart, connected and automated vehicle technology. Chief among these projects will be an Intelligent Transportation System and working with an automobile manufacturer to further develop and test connected and autonomous vehicle technology.
