Hough Community-Based Technology Innovation
IoT Collaborative
Smart City Project Overview

Organization logo

This project in the Hough neighborhood is an authentic, people-driven community engagement process in which residents are at the center of innovation in their neighborhoods. Rather than outsiders imposing technology and digital solutions, we sought to invert the traditional research-to-community adoption process. The IoT Collaborative has employed Appreciative Inquiry, a strengths-based approach to innovation, to engage residents to determine the digital solutions, devices, and applications residents need to improve their lives. Working with partners, including DigitalC and Ward 7 leadership, has been critical to engaging the community. The first phase of the project engaged over 300 community residents through "kitchen table talks' and concluded in a "let's Talk Tech - Hough Community Day" summit in September 2019. The IoT Collaborative team is now focused on identifying technology solutions for the community-identified opportunities that would help bring life to residents’ aspirations for a safe and walkable neighborhood and good health and well-being. The IoT Collaborative will continue to work hand-in-hand with communities to develop and deploy the necessary technology projects in the neighborhoods.
