Project Description

Otter Park Outdoor Classroom
The Trust for Public Land
Smart City Project Overview

Community organizations, schools, and residents near Otter Park now have a new space for recreation and environmental education. Together with partner Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District, The Trust for Public Land designed an outdoor classroom that was built adjacent to existing playgrounds as well as a large green infrastructure basin in Cleveland’s Urban Agriculture Innovation Zone—28 acres of vacant land that has been repurposed into a center for creative agricultural activities.

Organization's mission and/or purpose

To create parks and protect land for people, ensuring healthy, livable communities for generations to come. Every park, playground, and public space we create is an open invitation to explore, wonder, discover, and play. We're proud to say that we've been connecting communities to the outdoors—and to each other—since 1972. Today, millions of Americans live within a 10-minute walk of a park or natural area we helped create, and countless more visit every year.

IMPACT STATEMENT

Materials and interpretive signage line an educational pathway around the basin to help visitors learn about topics such as water quality, urban land reinvestment, native plant selection, and historic rivers in the area. The classroom is open to the public and available for use by community residents, organizations, schools, and education outreach programs.
